Station #45 – Masset
Massett Marine Rescue operates the Royal Canadian Marine SAR Unit 45. Our 25 volunteers represent a diverse group of community members dedicated to providing marine rescue to protect the lives of mariners who ply the waters of northern Haida Gwaii. For thirty years a dedicated marine search and rescue service has operated from Masset Harbour providing protection for commercial and aboriginal fisheries, recreational mariners, and other marine traffic that plies these waters.
RCM-SAR 45 commands the NorthWard, a 7.5m Zodiac Hurricane with twin-175HP outboards capable of 40 knots. We have a berth in the local marina where the NorthWard can rapidly deploy, and a nearby base which houses equipment, training facilities, and storage for the NorthWard and our tow vehicle during regular maintenance. Our service region consists of some of the most remote, treacherous, and unpredictable marine areas in B.C. Our coxswains and crew are trained to the highest standards as set out by RCM-SAR, and are equipped with state-of-the-art personal protective gear and extensive familiarity with local waters and conditions.
